Weekend Flower & Jade Market

After breakfast Chunnan, Gina, Joy, Conia, and I went to the Weekend Flower and Jade Market. Imagine Pike Place Market and then multiply it by about 10 and you'll have a small idea of how many booths and stalls and vendors and people were there. Seriously, this thing takes up about ten to fifteen city blocks and is located under the elevated freeway. The first section was low price jade and art and knick knack vendors. The middle section (and by far the largest) was all live plants, flowers, trees, and associated gardening accessories. Fred would have had a grand time there. The third section was higher end jade and semi-precious stones, carvings, and art. We found one vendor who used thin sliced of stone as the backdrops for oriental shadowboxes with beautiful calligraphy and tiny miniatures worked into the pieces. The artist wraps the piece in a heavy brown paper then puts even more calligraphy on the wrapping. Makes it so pretty you really don't want to ruin the package by opening it.

  1. Sounds like you had a great time. Did you actually make it through the entire market?

  2. Ya, we walked the whole thing and poked into several stalls. Probably spent 2 or 3 hours there. Besides the gift for Virginia, I also bought a set of Chinese coins supposedly one from each emporer since the early 1600's. But for $10US I doubt they're authentic, but they are pretty. :-)
